Barometric Condensers

Industrial barometric condenser system with twin vertical vessels

Barometric condensers offer a highly reliable and economical solution for removing air, exhaust steam and process vapours from vacuum equipment. Proven over decades of industrial use, they are widely applied across the food, textile, pharmaceutical, alcohol, distillery, pulp and paper, refinery, salt manufacturing and chemical processing industries.

They are particularly suited to process plants operating vacuum stills, calandria pans, multiple-effect evaporators, vacuum crystallisers, high-vacuum water systems and process cooling equipment.

One of the principal advantages of a barometric condenser is its ability to discharge injection water through a tail pipe by gravity, removing the need for a discharge pump. This simple and efficient arrangement helps reduce operating complexity, maintenance requirements and overall system cost.

Barometric condensers also offer excellent resistance to flooding in the event of priming or liquid entrainment. In many industrial plants, vacuum equipment vapour exhaust connections are located at significant elevations above ground level. The use of a barometric condenser enables shorter vapour exhaust lines, helping to reduce leakage risk, improve system integrity and lower initial capital investment.

With no moving parts, compact installation requirements and minimal maintenance demands, barometric condensers provide a dependable, space-efficient solution for a wide range of vacuum and condensation duties.

Basic Types

Barometric condensers are generally available in two principal configurations:

Depending on the service conditions and process requirements, injection water may be introduced through jets, sprays, water curtains or a combination of these methods to achieve efficient vapour condensation and reliable vacuum performance.
