Efficient vacuum generation for industrial processes
New Field steam jet ejectors are designed to generate efficient vacuum using high-pressure steam as the motive fluid. These ejectors are suitable for a wide range of industrial processes where dependable vacuum creation is essential.
Available in single-stage and multi-stage configurations, New Field steam jet ejectors deliver robust performance, reliable operation and efficient vacuum generation across complex industrial environments. Each system is carefully engineered to provide a dependable and energy-conscious vacuum solution tailored to the requirements of the application.
Steam jet ejectors are among the simplest and most reliable devices used for vacuum operation. A typical ejector consists of a nozzle that discharges a high-velocity jet across a suction chamber connected to the equipment being evacuated.
Advantages of New Field Steam Jet Ejectors:
Product-Specific Features:
New Field’s Ejector Division provides specialised and innovative ejector vacuum technologies for the power generation, oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, cement, sugar, edible oil refinery and industrial markets worldwide.
Our systems play a critical role in improving operational reliability, process safety and plant efficiency. By combining proven engineering principles with practical application expertise, we help customers solve complex process challenges and achieve their core operational objectives.
The operating principle of a steam jet ejector is based on the conversion of pressure energy into kinetic energy. High-pressure motive steam passes through a nozzle, where its pressure energy is converted into a high-velocity jet. This high-velocity steam entrains the gas or vapour being evacuated from the process.
The resulting mixture then enters a diffuser, where velocity energy is converted back into pressure energy. As a result, the discharge pressure of the mixture becomes significantly higher than the suction pressure, while remaining lower than the motive steam pressure.
A single-stage steam ejector has a limited compression capability and performs most efficiently within a specific compression ratio. Where higher compression ratios are required, two or more ejectors can be arranged in series, reducing the compression requirement across each stage.
For applications requiring higher gas-handling capacity, multiple ejectors may also be arranged in parallel. These systems can be configured as single-stage or multi-stage arrangements, depending on the required vacuum level, process load and operating conditions.
Steam jet ejectors are widely used across vacuum processing applications due to their operational simplicity, reliability and cost efficiency. They are suitable for a wide variety of equipment, including stills, vacuum deaerators, evaporators, crystallisers, oil deodorisers, steam vacuum refrigeration systems, flash coolers, condensers, vacuum pan dryers, dehydrators, vacuum impregnators, freeze dryers and vacuum filters.
They are also used in specialised applications such as stream degassing of metals and vacuum melting of metals.
Steam jet ejectors offer strong operational and economic advantages across a broad range of pumping capacities. Corrosive applications can be effectively handled by selecting suitable materials that provide the required corrosion resistance and structural strength at the operating temperatures involved.
Vacuum system performance is influenced by several key factors, including:
A well-designed ejector typically operates most efficiently between approximately 50% and 115% of its design capacity. Operation beyond this range may be possible, although efficiency will generally reduce outside the optimum design window.
Cooling water temperature also has a significant impact on ejector capacity. Colder condensing water can increase system capacity, while warmer water can reduce performance. This effect becomes especially important in ejectors designed for low absolute pressure applications.
Steam pressure has a direct effect on ejector performance and system capacity. Higher motive steam pressures can allow larger capacities for a given steam consumption, particularly in single-stage and two-stage ejector systems.
However, the benefit of higher steam pressure becomes less significant as the required absolute suction pressure decreases. For efficient operation, the motive steam should be at least dry saturated steam. Where moisture is present, a properly sized steam separator can be used to remove a high percentage of entrained moisture before the steam enters the ejector.
For certain applications, water jet ejectors may be combined with steam jet ejectors to create compact and efficient vacuum pumping systems. In such arrangements, the water jet ejector can act as both an intercondenser and a final-stage ejector, providing an economical solution where the non-condensable gas load is relatively low compared with the condensable vapour load.
When selecting a vacuum system, both capital investment and operating costs must be considered. In power plant applications, for example, the behaviour of the complete plant must be assessed as operating conditions change.
If the amount of non-condensable gas increases, each gas extraction system responds differently. Steam ejectors may require increased motive steam consumption, while compressors and liquid ring vacuum pumps increase auxiliary power consumption.
For plants requiring a fixed power output, auxiliary energy demand can influence turbine sizing and overall plant economics. Steam ejectors draw operating energy from steam rather than directly from generated electrical power, whereas compressors and liquid ring vacuum pumps consume electrical power from plant output. This distinction can have a significant impact on total lifecycle cost, particularly where the cost of steam and electricity differs.
When specifying ejector equipment, it is important to provide complete process and operating data to ensure accurate system selection and design. The more information available to the manufacturer, the more effectively the ejector system can be engineered for the application.
Key information typically required includes:
Providing the application details is especially important, as many design considerations become clearer when the process duty and operating environment are properly understood.
New Field designs and manufactures a complete range of steam jet ejector configurations to suit different vacuum requirements and process conditions.
| Configuration | Typical Use / Capability |
|---|---|
| Single-Stage Steam Jet Ejectors | Ideal for moderate vacuum levels, typically achieving around 40 mm Hg abs., depending on process conditions and motive steam availability. |
| Two-Stage Ejectors with Intercondensers | Designed for lower pressure requirements below 4 in. Hg abs. The intercondenser improves efficiency by condensing vapours between ejector stages and reducing the load on subsequent stages. |
| Three-Stage Ejectors with Intercondensers | Used for vacuum requirements typically ranging from 5 mm Hg abs. to 15 mm Hg abs., with multiple ejector units and intermediate condensers for improved performance and reduced steam consumption. |
| Four-Stage Ejectors with Intercondensers | Capable of achieving vacuum levels as low as 0.5 mm Hg abs., making them suitable for high-demand industrial processes requiring deep vacuum performance. |
| Five and Six-Stage Steam Jet Ejectors | Designed for ultra-high vacuum applications in the micron range, providing maximum performance, stability and precision for highly demanding process applications. |
