Efficient condensation for reliable plant performance

New Field surface condensers are engineered to condense turbine exhaust steam, maintain vacuum at turbine discharge and support improved cycle efficiency across power generation and mechanical drive applications.

Overview

Surface condensers are critical components in traditional coal-fired power plants, cogeneration facilities and combined-cycle power plants. They are designed to convert exhaust steam from its gaseous state into condensate under sub-atmospheric pressure, while also supporting the removal of non-condensable gases from the steam cycle in conjunction with the vacuum system.

By creating and maintaining vacuum at the turbine discharge, surface condensers help enhance overall cycle efficiency, improve system performance and enable the recovery of high-quality steam condensate for reuse as boiler feed water. This supports both operational efficiency and resource sustainability.

With more than 54 years of manufacturing experience, New Field has produced over 1,000 surface condensers for global applications. The largest condenser supplied by New Field includes a surface area of 3,300 square metres and a steam flow capacity of 125 TPH.

Design and Manufacturing Capability

New Field designs and manufactures economically sized condensers for smaller turbine ratings below 100 MW, as well as large modular condensers for industrial and power generation applications. Compact circular configurations are available where ease of shipping, installation efficiency and space optimisation are key project requirements.

All New Field surface condensers are designed and built in accordance with the latest Heat Exchange Institute standards, while also meeting project-specific client requirements. Designs can incorporate enhanced deaeration systems and a range of turbine exhaust arrangements, including axial, top steam inlet and side inlet configurations, helping to improve plant layouts where space is limited.

New Field surface condensers are fabricated in-house at state-of-the-art facilities in India and Germany. These facilities operate in accordance with ASME code requirements and are supported by a strong reputation for quality fabrication, dependable execution and on-time delivery.

Technical Highlights

The air-cooling zone is located in the coolest part of the condenser to minimise steam carryover to the ejector vacuum system along with non-condensable gases. This improves vacuum system efficiency and supports stable condenser operation.

Applications

New Field surface condensers are primarily used to condense exhaust steam from turbines, maximising cycle efficiency by converting steam into pure condensate for reuse as boiler feed water in the steam generator or boiler. This makes them essential for energy recovery, resource efficiency and reliable turbine operation.

Geothermal Steam Condensers

New Field has extensive experience in designing vacuum condensers for applications involving high non-condensable gas loads. Geothermal steam condensers require a significantly different design approach compared with conventional power plant condensers, as geothermal steam is often highly corrosive and may contain substantial quantities of non-condensable gases.

Special attention is given to reduced overall heat transfer rates, lower LMTD, pressure drop, subcooling, vent flow paths for large non-condensable gas volumes and material selection to prevent corrosion. The associated vacuum system typically comprises multi-stage steam ejectors with direct or indirect type inter-condensers, selected according to process requirements.
